British intelligence has long used clandestine "undeniable briefings" to release information real and false to tame hacks including David Rose...

My secret life began, as if scripted by P G Wodehouse, with an invitation to tea at the Ritz. The call came at the end of the first week of May 1992. I was the Observer's home affairs correspondent, and at the other end of the line was a man we shall call Tom Bourgeois, special assistant to "C", Sir Colin McColl, the then chief of the Secret Intelligence Service. SIS (or MI6, as it is more widely known) was "reaching out" to selected members of the media, Bourgeois explained, and over lunch a few days earlier with McColl, my editor, Donald Trelford, had suggested that I was a reliable chap - not the sort, even years later, to betray a confidence by printing an MI6 man's real name. Would I like an informal, off-the-record chat? You bet I would. "I make no apologies for the cliché," Bourgeois said, "since we do need a way to spot each other. I will be in the lobby, with a rolled-up copy of the Times."

'Gun plot pair' get a holiday

Mirror

A couple accused of a gun smuggling plot have had their bail conditions relaxed to take their two children on holiday. Desmond and Alison Kearns are facing terror charges after alleged conversations between them and security agents posing as arms dealers. The recordings allegedly concern the purchase of weapons and explosives for the Real IRA. Mr Kearns, 42, is charged with conspiracy to possess weapons and explosives. His 38-year-old wife is charged with inviting an unnamed person to provide terrorism weapons. The PSNI objected to the family, from Lurgan, going to Donegal as they "would have no control over monitoring their movements". But Mr Justice Gillen said the PSNI and Garda could co-operate on the matter.

A man from Co Armagh charged with trying to procure weapons for the Real IRA was granted bail yesterday after police were forced to admit that recorded evidence central to the case had been rendered useless.

Desmond Kearns of Tannaghmore Green in Lurgan has been on remand in Maghaberry prison since June last year facing charges of conspiring to possess weapons for the republican group.

Police strongly opposed bail in the past. However, the prosecution told a court yesterday the police now had no issue with the 42-year-old being released pending trial following a "change of circumstances".

A Co Armagh man was "caught red-handed trying to procure weapons" for the Real IRA, a bail hearing has heard. Desmond Kearns (42) from Tannaghmore Green in Lurgan, Co Antrim, is in custody on a charge of conspiracy to possess firearms with intent.

During a compassionate bail hearing at the High Court in Belfast yesterday, a Crown lawyer said that in 2004, the accused and his wife travelled across Europe to obtain cigarettes. It is claimed the plan was to smuggle the cigarettes into Ireland.

During their travels they became involved with undercover security personnel who recorded them during alleged cigarette deals. The lawyer claimed the cigarette dealing was "part of a means to fund a terrorist organisation"

A lawyer for Kearns said he wished to attend his son's confirmation. Lord Justice Girvan said Kearns would be released between 9am and 6pm on Saturday. He added: "He can attend the chapel and the restaurant then go back to Maghaberry."
