Two Irishmen were detained in the southern Algarve region on Saturday, along with a Portuguese national

Two suspected Irish republican dissidents have been arrested in Portugal.  They were detained under the country's anti-terrorist legislation in the southern Algarve region on Saturday, along with a Portuguese man.

The Irish nationals are understood to be accused of links to the Real IRA.

One of the Irishmen is understood to be resident in Algarve and had been previously targeted by the Irish security forces over weapons and cigarette smuggling into Ireland.

The other Irishman was intercepted shortly after arriving in Algarve on a flight from Belfast.

Police in Portugal said they had arrested the trio in connection with a "criminal organisation dedicated among other things to international arms trafficking".
